Hozza’s Hot Chocolate 

My son and husband, Hozza or Howard, have suddenly started loving a hot chocolate. One Saturday, the weather was so cold outside that I think my husband wanted a drink that would warm him through. As soon as my husband suggests it, my son will normally follow him. The next day my husband decided to try to make his own at home. Something I did not discourage! The results were amazing and the recipe is so simple and easy.

The ingredients we use in our hot chocolate are great for the body, especially a developing body like my son Ted.  Much better  for you than the shop bought hot chocolate powder. We also use organic full fat milk in Ted and Howard’s. I’m not so good on full fat milk so I like to have mine with oat or brown rice milk. However, the health benefits of drinking organic milk for a developing body include higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids and CLA, more antioxidants and more vitamins than conventional milk. Milk is one of the most important components of our diet when we are growing as it ensures healthy growth and development.

Modern dairies however, use different types of chemicals in milk production. These include pesticides and fertilizers for growing the fodder, as well as hormones and antibiotics that are fed to the cows. The excessive use of these chemicals in conventional milk production and the harmful effects that they create, have resulted in an increased demand for organic milk.

For us this is the major reason why we have choosen to buy organic milk for our son. He enjoys milk and we want him to have the best as long as we can afford it. We want our son to enjoy good quality food, learn about where it comes from and what effects food has on the environment.

Serves 1

  • Mug x 1
  • Small saucepan x 1
  • Tablespoon x 1
  • Stirring spoon x 1


  • Full fat milk x 1 mug (Or a milk or your choice)
  • Raw cacao powder x 2 tbsp
  • Maple syrup x 1 tbsp ( or more depending on how sweet you like it)


  • Measure the milk and put it into the sauce pan.

  • Next add the raw cacao powder and maple syrup to the pan.
  • Put the pan on a medium heat and stir until the powder dissolves and it has warmed through.
  • Be careful not to let the milk boil over.
  • It should take around five minutes or so.
  • Once it’s hot or at a temperature you like pour the hot chocolate back into the mug.
  • Then enjoy.

We all enjoy chocolate in this house and we love a Hozza Hot Chocolate special. It’s a drink that can really be enjoyed on a cold winters day. In front of a favourite film or just sitting down and relaxing. The hot chocolate can be adjusted to anyone’s tastes. So you can add more or less cacao or more or less maple syrup. It’s my favourite way to have this drink but I know the boys like a little bit more sweetness in their drinks. Maple syrup is not too bad for the body so I don’t mind as much.
