Slow Cooker Stewing Steak Cottage Pie

Normally I always make a cottage pie with mince beef. I have never tried making it with stewing steak. Nor have I tried cooking the filling in my slow cooker pot. Therefore I decided to try both of these methods. I have fussy eaters in my family so I’m never sure how a new dish is going to be received. My husband and son really enjoyed this dish so I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, as everyone liked the meal I had to share the recipe with you. Below is a video and recipe for you.

Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Stirring spoon
  • Baking tray
  • Pie dish
  • Slotted spoon
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Masher
  • Spoon
  • Spreader

Ingredients

  • Beef stewing steak x 500g
  • Onion x 1
  • Carrot x 1
  • Celery x 1 stick
  • Bone broth, chicken or vegetable stock x 600mls
  • Chickpea flour or plain flour x 2 tbsps
  • Dried mixed herbs x 1 – 2 tsps
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Potatoes x 800g
  • Olive oil x 2 – 4 tbsp
  • Milk x 50mls or more (your choice)

Method

  • Peel, slice and dice the onion.
  • Slice the top and bottom from the celery.
  • Now slice the celery thinly.
  • Peel and grate the carrot.
  • Put the beef stewing steak into the slow cooker pot.
  • Add in the onions, celery, carrot, bone broth or chicken or vegetable stock, chickpea flour or plain flour, dried mixed herbs and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Mix these ingredients together.
  • Turn the pot onto high for 2 -3 hours and low for 5 – 6 hours.
  • Once the filling has nearly cooked preheated 200°C or gas mark 6.
  • Pierce the potatoes with a sharp knife.
  • Put the potatoes into the baking tray.
  • When the oven has preheated put the baking tray into the oven and cook for an hour.
  • Once the potato are golden brown and soft on the inside remove from the oven and leave to cool.
  • When they are cool enough to touch slice them in half and scoop the potato from the skin.
  • Add the olive oil and milk and mash the potatoes until smooth.
  • Set to one side.
  • When the filling has cooked remove the lid from the pot.
  • Leave to cool.
  • Shred the beef in the pot using the forks.
  • Remove the beef and vegetables using a slotted spoon and place in a pie dish.
  • Pour the stock into a sauce pan.
  • Add more stock if necessary.
  • Put onto a low heat and leave to warm through stirring occasionally.
  • Put spoonfuls of mash potato onto the filling and spread as evenly as possible.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C or gas mark 6.
  • Place the pie dish into the oven and bake for about 25 – 30 minutes or until the potato is golden brown.
  • Then serve with peas or green beans and the stock that was warmed through earlier.
  • Finally enjoy.
