Southern Spice Burgers

Southern Spice Burgers

My husband Howard, son Ted and I are huge burger fans. In recent years I have made a variety of burgers. It’s hard to pick a favourite but I think this one is up there. The other night Howard wanted southern spice chips. Ted went online to look for a recipe which I adapted to suit our tastes. Then hey presto, these spices have given me a lot of new ideas for meals. This burger is one of those ideas and I want to say a huge thank you to my husband for the inspiration. We now have a lot of yummy dinners to get through including this one.

What are your favourite burgers and why? Did someone inspire or persuade you? Let me know in the comments below and please don’t forget to like and follow me.

Equipment

  • Vegetable peeler
  • Grater
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Plate
  • Baking tray

Ingredients for the burgers

  • Mince beef x 500g
  • Courgette x 1
  • Ground flax seed or breadcrumbs x 4 – 8 tbsps
  • Tamari or soy sauce x 2 tbsp
  • Garlic granules x 1 tsp
  • Onion granules x 1 tsp
  • Mild or hot chili powder x 1 tsp
  • Cayenne pepper x 1/4 – 1/2 tsp
  • Smoked paprika x 1 tsp
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method for the burgers

  • Peel and grate the courgette.
    • I like to use a fine grater for this task as it makes the burger very moist.
  • Add the grated courgette to the bowl along with the mince beef.
  • Next add the tamari or soy sauce, ground flax seed, garlic granules, onion granules, mild or hot chili powder, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika and salt and pepper.
  • Dampen your hands under the tap.
  • Using your hands, scrunch all the ingredients together.
  • You may need to dampen your hands again during this process.
  • Divide the mixture as evenly as possible into quarters.
  • Grab a quarter and make a burger shape with your hands.
  • Put the burger onto a plate and put a dimple in the middle of the burger.
  • The dimple will stop the burger from rising too much when it’s cooking in the oven or on the grill.
  • When all the burgers are made store in the fridge for at least two hours or overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 180ºC and add the tray at the same time.
  • Once the oven has preheated carefully remove the tray from the oven and put the burgers in.
  • The cold burgers will hit the hot baking tray and hopefully become juicy and tender.
  • Let them cook for 25 – 30 minutes and remove once browned on the outside.
  • Then serve with chips and salad or a side of your choice.
  • Finally enjoy.
