It’s inspired by the classic Italian favourite and this recipe takes traditional bolognese to the next level by using tender, slow-cooked pulled beef that melts in your mouth. With minimal prep and maximum flavour, the slow cooker does all the hard work, leaving you with a deeply savoury, hearty sauce that clings beautifully to perfectly cooked spaghetti. Serves 6 – 8

Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Grater
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Slow cooker

Ingredients

  • Beef joint x 1.57 – 2 kg
  • Onions x 1 large
  • Garlic
  • Carrots x 2
  • Courgette x 2
  • Tomatoes x 2 400g tins
  • Tomato puree x 2 tbsp
  • Tamari x 2 tbsp
  • Bay leaves x 2
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pasta x 500g

Method

  • Start by peeling and grating the carrots and courgettes.
  • Peel, slice and dice the onions.
  • Next peel and slice the garlic.
  • Put these ingredients into the slow cooker pot.
  • Then add bay leaves, tomato puree and tamari.
  • Pour over the chopped tomatoes.
  • Mix these ingredients together.
  • Place the joint of beef on top.
  • Add the salt and pepper to taste.
  • Stir all the ingredients together.
  • Turn the pot onto high for 3 – 4 hours or low for 7 – 8 hours.
  • Once cooked turn the pot off and remove the lid.
  • Leave to rest for about 10 – 20 minutes.
  • If necessary remove the beef joint from the slow cooker onto a board.
  • Cut into chunks and pull the chunks apart with two forks.
    • Brisket or chuck roast are best for pulling apart.
  • Once all the beef has been pulled put it back into the sauce.
  • Turn the slow cooker onto keep warm.
  • Boil the pasta as per the packet instructions.
  • When it’s cooked add the pasta to the sauce and not the other way round.
  • The serve and enjoy.
