Dad’s Fish Pie

My Dad was not a great fish fan but he did love a pie especially if it was made with mash potato. I think this was probably his favourite fish pie recipe. As well as pies my Dad loved watching chefs on TV like James Martin but his favourite chef was Rick Stein. The fish dish in this recipe was probably based on a Rick Stein recipe.

Rick Stein is a celebrity chef and television presenter. I always think of him as a fish chef. When I caught his programmes on television he would always be cooking fish and I would ask my Dad, ‘Does this man cook anything else but fish?’. To which my Dad would reply, ‘No’. My Dad would always watch his programmes on TV and I think he got a lot of inspiration from Mr Stein for his meals.

When I lived at home spending time with my Dad watching TV was always good fun. I miss these times I spend with my Dad, but whenever I see Rick Stein on TV, or another TV chef, it always reminds me of those times. So this recipe is my Dad’s version of a Rick Stein fish pie and it’s delicious. Everyone in this house enjoyed it and we think you will too.

Dad’s Fish Pie

  • Sharp knife
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Chopping Board
  • Large Saucepan
  • Frying pan
  • Stirring spoon
  • Fork
  • Teaspoon
  • Colander
  • Potato Masher
  • Pie dish
  • Serving spoon


  • Cod x 500g (or a white fish of your choice)
  • Cooked prawns x 150g
  • Leek x 1
  • Carrots x 2
  • Cream x 300mls
  • Olive oil x 2 tsp
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Ingredients for the mash

  • White Potatoes x 600g
  • Milk x 50mls (a milk of your choice)
  • Butter x 2 small knobs
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  • Preheat the oven to 180°.
  • Peel the potatoes and cut them into chunks.
  • Put the large saucepan on a high heat on the hob and add water.
  • Bring to the boil and add a pinch of salt to the water.
  • Once the water is boiling add the potatoes.
  • Again bring to the boil then turn the heat down leaving the lid loosely on.
  • Boil the potatoes for 10 – 15 minutes.
    • When the potatoes are done you will be able to put a fork into a piece and the piece will fall off with ease.
  • While the potatoes are boiling, slice the leek then peel and slice the carrots.
  • Next slice the cod into 1 cm strips and set to one side.
  • Put the frying pan on a high heat and add the olive oil.
  • Spread the oil across the base of the pan with a plastic brush.
  • Once the pan is hot, add the leeks and fry until they become soft.
  • Add in the slices of carrot and fry for a further two minutes.
  • Now turn the heat down, add in the fish, stir once more and leave to simmer while you mash the potatoes.
  • When the potatoes are boiled, turn off the heat and pour the hot water through the colander.
  • Pour the potatoes back into the large saucepan and mash with the potato masher.
  • Add in the milk, butter and drizzle a little olive oil over the top and then sprinkle over the nutmeg.
  • Begin to mash again until there are no big lumps in the mash.
    • A few small lumps, I think adds texture so don’t worry about them.
  • Set the mash potato aside and in the pie dish add the cream sauce from the frying pan.
  • Stir in the prawns at this point too.
  • Then spread the mash potato across the top as evenly as possible and put in the oven for 20 – 25 minutes or until the potato has browned.
  • Once cooked, serve with fried spinach and garlic and enjoy.

Dad’s Fish Pie

My husband, Howard has fairly similar tastes to my Dad and he’s not a big fish fan either (unless it is Scampi or Fish Fingers!). However, he enjoyed this dish as he likes a pie. My son, Ted is a lover of fish and he really loved this meal especially as it had one of his favourite foods in, prawns. The recipe is quick, simple and easy to do and it’s a good meal that will serve the family. It’s best cooked fresh too so a great one to make at the weekend. However you decide to enjoy this meal, as always, enjoy!
