For many years I have been making my own homemade baked beans. Baked beans are a British staple and we love them with everything. When I started making my own I would cook them in the slow cooker. The other day I forgot to put the ingredients into the slow cooker so at the end of the day I found myself at the hob cooking them from scratch. They were so tasty that of course, I had to share the recipe with you. Below is a video and recipe for you.

Serves 4
Equipment
- Sharp knife
- Chopping board
- Saucepan x 2
- Colander
- Stirring spoon
- Tablespoon
- Blender
Ingredients
- Dried beans x 300g or 2 x 240g tins
- Onion x 1
- Carrot x 1
- Celery x 1
- Tomatoes x 1 400g tin
- Chicken or vegetable or bone broth x 200mls
- BBQ Sauce x 2 – 4 tbsps
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Measure the amount of beans you will need for your recipe.
- Put them into the large bowl, if you haven’t already then cover in enough water and then a couple of inches above.
- Soak the beans in the fridge overnight.
- You may want to use a bowl with a lid.
- The next day remove the beans from the fridge and pour any excess water through the colander.
- Rinse under the tap.
- Put the beans into the large saucepan.
- Again pour enough water to cover the beans plus a two inches above.
- Add in the baking powder and salt to your taste.
- Turn the hob onto high and bring to the boil.
- When the pan starts to boil turn the heat down to low.
- Leave to simmer until most of the water has disappeared.
- Then drain through the colander and rinse under the tap.
- Set the beans to one side.
- Alternatively use tinned beans.
- Drain the tinned beans through the colander and set to one side.
- Peel, slice and dice the onion.
- Next peel and grate the carrot.
- Remove the top and bottom, bed bits, from the celery.
- Slice the celery into 1/2 centimetre pieces.
- Put a large pan onto a high heat on the hob and add oil to the base.
- When the pan is hot, add in the onions and fry until they start to soften.
- Now add in the grated celery fry until it starts to soften.
- Next add in the carrot and fry until they start to warm through.
- Again this should only take about 30 seconds to a minute.
- Pour over the tomatoes and pour the stock into the empty tomato tin.
- Pouring the stock into the empty tin will help to get rid of any juice around the outside.
- Stir all the ingredients together and add in the BBQ sauce.
- Again stir until everything is well mixed together.
- Sprinkle over salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring these ingredients to the boil, then turn the heat down to low.
- Leave to simmer for about 20 – 30 minutes.
- The sauce should resemble a jam like texture at the end.
- When it looks jammy remove from the heat and leave to cool.
- Once cool enough to touch add the sauce to the blender.
- Blend all these ingredients together.
- Put the sauce back into the saucepan and heat through.
- Place the beans into the sauce and stir round until heated through again.
- Serve with jacket potato or dish of your choice.
- Then enjoy.

BBQ Baked Beans (On the Hob) were delicious and we loved them. They were easy to prepare and cook. The recipe is a little time consuming but the efforts are worth the results. These beans can be frozen too. All of the ingredients are freezable so you could make a big batch and freeze them. Plus they make super tasty leftovers too. However you decide to eat this dish, as always, please enjoy. Thank you. xxx
