Last month I made a Chocolate Chilli that was such a huge hit in this house, so I decided to add raw chocolate to my Spaghetti Bolognaise recipe. It was an even bigger success than the normal dish. Spag Bowl, as we like to call it, is a staple dinner at the Knibbs’. It’s one of our favourites and I’m always guaranteed clean plates when I serve this meal. By adding chocolate it gave the bolognaise sauce a rich and smooth texture that invites you to want more.
Dark chocolate is made from cacao or cocoa which starts life as harvested cacao beans from the plant’s seed pods. When the bean are harvested they are fermented and dried before being sent off to factories for further production. Raw cacao or raw chocolate is different. It does not undergo any heating and therefore retains most of the nutrients. Raw cacao is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans so it retains more of its natural goodness.
So adding raw cacao to a spag bowl not only gives extra flavour it also gives you extra nutrition too. It’s a great meal that will feed all the hungry mouths at the dinner table. Plus it’s simple and easy to do. My husband, son and I all enjoyed it and we would recommend giving it a try.
- Sharp knife
- Chopping board
- Frying pan
- Mince beef x 500g
- Onions x 1 large
- Carrots x 2
- Courgette x 2
- Raw chocolate x 20g
- Tomatoes x 2 400g tins
- Tommy K or tomato puree x 2 tbsp
- Beef broth x 250mls
- Oregano x 1tsp
- Bay leaves x 2
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil
- Brown rice pasta x 300g
- Green Beans x 4 handfuls
- Parmesan or mature cheddar (optional)
- Start by grating the carrots and courgettes.
- Grate the raw chocolate and set this ingredient aside.
- Slice the onions and the garlic.
- Heat the pan on a medium to high heat.
- Add enough olive oil to cover the base of the pan.
- When the pan has heated add the onions and garlic.
- Fry for about 2 minutes then add the mince beef.
- Now fry for a further 5 minutes or until the mince has browned.
- Pour over the beef broth and tomatoes.
- Then add the grated carrots, courgettes, raw chocolate, bay leaves, oregano and tommy k or tomato puree.
- Add the salt and pepper to taste.
- Stir all the ingredients into the sauce and then bring to the boil.
- Turn the heat down and leave to simmer for about 40 minutes.
- Leave 10 minutes at the end to the boil the pasta.
- Plus add the green beans to the bolognaise sauce at this point too.
- When the pasta is cooked, drain and add the pasta to the sauce.
- Serve and add cheese if necessary, then enjoy.
Chocolate Spaghetti Bolognaise is a healthy, nutritious meal that will feed the family. As I mentioned earlier there are no complaints when it is served without the chocolate. However, with the chocolate there were definitely no objections to this dish. It’s also a brilliant meal to make for the freezer so it can then be a quick mid week dinner. So you can cook double of this meal and put the leftovers in the freezer for another day. However you decide to eat this dish, as always, enjoy.
