The sunshine in the UK had decided to make an appearance, sort of! Touch wood, it stays around for a while this summer. We Brits love to discuss the weather especially when it’s good. In this country when the sun is shining many people start to talk about BBQs. My son Ted, who is 8 is becoming very keen on them suddenly.
Therefore, I think, burgers are always needed at this time of year. I love a juicy burger cooked on the BBQ but I also like to change my recipes. A change is as good as a rest as they say. I was standing at the pantry looking in when I saw the Garam Masala spice mix. I wondered what this would taste like in the burger . The results were amazing and it’s a recipe I decided to share with you. Below is a video and recipe for you.

- Small mixing bowl
- Large mixing bowl
- Chopping board
- Vegetable peeler
- Muslin cloth
- Baking tray
Ingredients for the burgers
- Beef x 500g
- Onion x 1
- Carrot x 1
- Courgette x 1
- Egg x 1
- Flaxseed x 4 tbsp
- Garam masala x 2 tsp
- Dried oregano x 2 tsp
- Tomato puree x 2 tbsp
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method for the burgers
- Peel the onion then slice and dice it into small pieces.
- Set the onion aside.
- Now peel the carrot and courgette.
- Grate the carrot and courgette.
- Once both the vegetables have been grated put them into the muslin cloth.
- Fold the cloth around the vegetables and squeeze juice from the veggies.
- Once all or most of the juice is squeezed out set to one side.
- Put the mince or ground beef into a mixing bowl and sprinkle over the garam masala and oregano.
- Now add salt and pepper to your taste.
- Then add the tomato puree and the egg.
- Put the squeezed veggies into the bowl as well.
- Add flaxseed and scrunch all these ingredients together with your hands.
- Once everything is well mixed together divide the mixture into four even parts.
- Now flatten the burger and make sure their is a dip in the middle of the burger.
- It will hopefully stop if from rising when in the oven.
- Now put the burgers into the fridge for a couple of hours or even overnight.
- Place the burgers onto a baking tray and put into the oven for about 25 – 30 minutes or until golden brown on the outside.
- Then serve with chips and salad or beans and mango chutney.
Masala Burgers was a huge hit in our house. My husband Howard and son Ted loved these beauties. Due to the weather we could not cook them on the BBQ but I’m sure it’s a recipe we will be eating again in the future. All the ingredients in this recipe are freezable so you could make this in advance of a meal. Then freeze the uncooked burgers, defrost and then cook when you need them.
